Ramakrishna Mission Residential College

An Autonomous College under University of Calcutta

College with Potential for Excellence(CPE)

English

Nestling close to lush bougainvillea sprays that are a delight to the eye, the Department of English has a beautiful setting, with the inner and outer walls of its classrooms displaying portraits of the greats of English literature—Shakespeare, Milton and George Bernard Shaw et al. The Dept. breathes an ambience of homeliness and warmth its students feel on their pulses the moment they set foot on its precincts.

The Dept. of English was born one of the firstlings of the College in 1960. Legend has it that from the beginning, the Dept. was the blue-eyed boy of Swami Lokeswarananda who had himself studied Honours in English in his student days. He saw to it that the Dept. had teachers of proven excellence on its teaching staff. Incredible as it might sound, he could persuade even Dr. Subodh Chandra Sengupta, a Shakespeare scholar of international stature, to teach in the Dept. for a few months. During its early years, thanks wholly to Swami Lokeswaranandaji's dynamic initiative, the Dept. faculty was an impressive array of scholarly and dedicated teachers. In the early 1960s, between 1960 and 1964 to be precise, Dr. Satyendranath Roy (D. Phil. Oxon), Dr. Sarojendranath Roy (Ph.D. London), Sri Sourindranath Mitra (the first Head of the Dept.), Sri Sudhangshu Sekhar Mandal, Sri Kshitindra Chandra Ghosal, Sri AjitNath Nandi, Sri Akshay Kr. Dey, Sri Nirad Bandhu Mukherjee (formerly of JU), Sri Binoy Chowdhury joined the Dept. and immensely contributed to its steady burgeoning. The Dept. owes profound debts of gratitude to them. The Dept. is also indebted, in no small measure, to Sri Dilip Kumar Sanyal, Sri Dwijadas Banerjee (first enrolled student of the College; later Director, RabindraBhaban, VB), Dr. Binoy Banerjee (alumnus, ex-Professor, NBU), Prof. Harijiban Ghosh (ex-Principal, Holkar College, Madhya Pradesh), Sri Prasanta Pal, Sri Adhip Kr. Ghosh Dastidar, Sri Prasanta Banerjee, Sri M. N. De, Dr. Parbaticharan Chakraborty (alumnus; ex-Professor, BU), Sri Cowas de Tambuli, Sri Amitava Mitra (formerly of IIT, Kharagpur), Dr. Swapan Chakraborty (formerly Director, The National Library, Kolkata and now Tagore Chair Professor, Presidency University), Sri Sushil Mukherjee (formerly Principal, Scottish Church College), Prof. Ashok Mukherjee (formerly of Presidency College), Sri Kapila Chatterjee, Dr. Ramendra Kumar Sen (D. Litt., CU), Dr. Amrit Sen (Visva Bharati) and Dr. Amlan Dasgupta(JU) for their contribution to the enrichment of the Dept. in their capacities as full-time or guest teachers. At present, the faculty has 4 full-timers and 10 Guest lecturers.

A special word must be said about Sri Kshitindra Chandra Ghosal, the longest-serving Head of the Dept. (1962-83). More than anybody else before or since, he contributed to the Dept.'s consolidation into its present position of importance in the academic hierarchy of the College. A scholar equally at home with English and Bengali literature, a strict disciplinarian and an uncompromising perfectionist, he spared no pains to maintain a high standard of work culture in the Dept. and commanded the respect of his students as well as his colleagues. The Shakespeare Gallery, The Sophocles Gallery and the erstwhile Language Laboratory bear testimony to his creative genius and his exceptional organisational skill. It was under his leadership that the Dept. first hosted a 5-day State-Level Seminar on Humanities subjects under the UGC-sponsored COHSSIP (College Humanities and Social Sciences Improvement Programme) scheme, in July 1978. It was a grand success, indeed! On Sri Ghosal's retirement, the mantle of headship fell on Sri Sudhangshu Sekhar Mandal who ably sustained the legacy handed down to him. Sri Satiprasad Maiti took over as HOD in 1998.He was followed by Sri Dipaksankar Chakraborty in 2012. The present Head, Sri Satyaki Pal took over in December, 2013. At present, the three other members of Team English are: Sri Arya Ghosh, Sri Asim Mondal and Sri Dibakar Sarkar. As guest faculty, Prof Ashok Sengupta (of Kalyani University), Prof. Dr. Debiprasad Bhattacharya (formerly of KU), Prof. Tirthankar Das Purkayastha (alumnus and Professor, Vidyasagar University), Dr. Subhajit Sengupta (alumnus and Associate Professor, Burdwan University) among others, have enriched the academic activities of the department.

The Dept. boasts the richest seminar library of the college with a collection of more than 5500 books. Students borrow books at regular intervals and the faculty sees to it that the library delivers to full potential. The faculty is student-friendly, supportive and easy of access. The students of the Dept. have been, over the years, taking the lead in the cultural affairs of the College. They are all agog when it comes to the periodical publication of the Department's Wall-magazine 'Image'. The Dept. has recently set up an audio-visual unit where students can view film versions of the novels and dramas prescribed for study in their curriculum, besides other critically acclaimed movies.

Much as the faculty might wish, the Dept. went without a first class in the University exams over a long stretch of years. Then in 2003, Sri Shishir Roy, the Dept.'s wonder boy, broke the jinx. He not only secured 1st class but also won the 1st position. He repeated the performance in his M.A examination from Calcutta University. We are also proud of a distinguished alumnus of the Dept., Swami Purnatmananda, ex-Editor, UDBODHAN. An alumnus of this department Dr. Debnarayan Banerjee (1969-1972) is now the Vice Chancellor, Bankura University.

Seminar lectures, Symposia, workshops and talks by scholars well-known to the English-teaching academia, have always been a high spot of the Dept. In 2006, the Dept. had the proud privilege of hosting a UGC-Sponsored National-Level Seminar—the first ever in the college—on 'Indian Poetry in English: The Problem of Canon', with Prof. Nirmal Kumar Bhattacharya, Director, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in the Chair. Among the speakers were the late Prof. (Dr.) Niranjan Mohanty of Visva Bharati, and Sri Ranjit Hoskote, noted art critic and poet. The seminar was rounded off by a brainstorming one-to-one interface between Sri Amit Choudhury, eminent novelist in English and Dr. Swapan Chakraborty. The whole event was really a big draw. In 2012, another UGC-Sponsored two-day National-Level Seminar was organized by the department jointly with the Sahitya Academi, Eastern Region : On Engaging the Other In South Asian Literature In English: Problems and Politics of Representation on 17-18 February, 2012. The conference assumed international dimension with the presence of Sri Chandra Prakash Ghimire, Hon’ble Consul General, Consulate of Nepal in Kolkata, Dr Claire Chambers of Leeds Metropolitan University, DrNivedita Mazumdar of City University, New York and Prof Abhi Subedi of Tribhuban University, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr Swapan Chakraborty, Director National Library, Kolkata gave the keynote address and Professor Dr Krishna Sen of Calcutta University was the speaker at the concluding plenary session. Among the other speakers were Sri Ramkumar Mukhopadhyay , Regional Secretary, Sahitya  Akademi, Eastern Region, and Professor (Dr.) Christel Devadawson of Delhi University.

In 2009, the English Department Alumni Association in collaboration with the Dept. successfully hosted a talk by Sri Amitav Ghosh, a front-ranking novelist in English and winner of many accolades. 2010 saw the iconic Indian playwright in English, Sri Mahesh Dattani, visit the Dept. and give a heart-warming talk and read from his plays that held a capacity audience spell-bound at the Second Annual Alumni Lecture. The Third Annual Alumni Lecture was organized on 17 April, 2012. Professor Dr. Geraldine Forbes of State University of New York at Oswego spoke on Mohanta-Elokeshi Sambad – a feminist perspective. The talk was followed by conversation between Dr Forbes and Dr. Sumit Chakraborty of Rabindra Bharati University. Professor Dr. Elmar Schenkel of Leipzeig University delivered the 4th Annual Alumni Lecture on 28-02-2015 at the college Auditorium. The title of his talk was From Faust to Superman: The influence of GermanThought on British and American Literature. Prof. Schenkel had a hugely interesting session with the UG boys on the morning of 28th at the Shakespeare Gallery.

Since 2015, the department has been organizing the annual R.K. Sen Memorial lecture, instituted in the hallowed memory of Late Prof. Dr. Ramendra Kumar Sen by the family of late Dr Sen. Eminent thespian Sri Rudraprasad Sengupta and noted academic Prof Dr. Chinmoy Guha, Professor Department of English, Calcutta University, French Language scholar, twice recipient of legion d’honor from the Government of France, delivered the first two lectures in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

On 11 April 2014, the department organized its first inter-college students’ seminar on Postcolonialism Now: Reassessing Ambivalent Discourses. 25 students from various colleges and university of the state including research scholars participated in the seminar. Dr. Nilanjana Deb of Jadavpur University delivered the keynote address. Eminent teachers Dr. Avijit Sen, Dr. Tirthankar Das Purkayastha, Prof. Debaprasad Banerjee, Dr. Shubhajit Sengupta were present at the session as chairpersons. The huge success of the seminar made the dept. ambitious enough to make the event a two-day affair in 2015 and 2016. In April 2015 the keynote address was delivered by Dr. Chandreyee Niyogi of Jadavpur University on Interdisciplinarity and in February 2016 it was eminent Professor Dr. AvijitSen of Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan speaking on Theatre East and West.

The attainment of Autonomous Status in 2008 and, by happy co-incidence, the introduction of the P.G. course in the Dept. in 2009 have no doubt set the Dept. firmly on the road to further expansion of its activities. Some of the old boys of the Dept. including Prof. P. C. Chakraborty, Dr. Tirthankar Das Purakayastha, Dr. Subhajit Sengupta, Dr. Sandip Ain, Sri Siddharta Dey, Sri Suvankar Ghosh Roy Chowdhury, Sri Soumya Chakraborty, Sri Shishir Roy, Sri Indradeep Bhattacharya, Sri Anupam Roy, Subhendu Ghatak —the Dept. cannot thank them enough—have come forward, in a remarkable gesture of solidarity, to help the Dept. grapple with the challenges the twin developments of 2008-09 have thrown its way. Quite a few of the PG students have subsequently qualified in the UGC conducted NET examination -  Sandipan Ghosh (JRF), Jyotirmoy Sil(JRF), Anindya Chatterjee, Rik Sarkar, Tathagata Chanda,Anupam Roy, SahidurRahaman, Amlan Gayen, Babul Paramanik. Babul Pramanik is now a full-time Assistant Professor at Chapra Govt. College. The Department takes great pride in this and in the fact that every year 8-10 of our UG boys successfully clear the entrance test for admission to PG classes in the prestigious universities like Delhi University, Jadavpur University, JNU, Hyderabad Central Univ. and EFLU, Hyderabad.

Since 2007 the department has been organizing a reunion of its own students every alternate year immediately after the college alumni reunion lunch, at its famous Shakespeare gallery. Senior and young members of the alumni address the gathering, Professor Sudhangshu Sekhar Mandal and Dr. Parbati Charan Chakraborty being the star speakers. Members exchange notes, reminisce their salad days at the department, sing songs and perform skits. In 2015, 146 ex-students turned up to make the reunion a grand success. The idea of annual alumni lectures was first mooted in one of these re-union meetings.

The 3rd boys of the Department have been organizing students’ tour every year since 1994. All members of the faculty try to be part of this tour at the request of the students. In 2015 and 2016 our destination was Varanasi.

New horizons unfold before the Dept. In the coming months the Department has plans to refurnish the Shakespeare Gallery, organize another UGC seminar, and bring out a journal.
