News from 26th March 2008 to 22nd May, 2008

Celebrations :

  • The first day of Baisakh was celebrated on 14th April, 2008 with puja, prayers at the Brahmananda Bhavana Shrine . About 50 devotees attended the puja and took Prasada.

  • The Ashrama Foundation Day (Akshyay Tritiya) was celebrated on 8th May, 2008 with Puja, Homa at Brahmananda Bhavana Shrine. Swami Jitatmanandaji and Swami Swatantranandaji spoke. Dr. Satchidananda Dhar presided. Swami Asaktanandaji welcomed. Sri Rahul Majumder (2nd Year) sang from the college section. 800 guests had lunch at the college hostels.

  • Rabindra Jayanti was celebrated on 8th May, 2008 at 4.30 p.m. at Brahmananda Bhavana lawn. Prof. Achintya Kumar Biswas, J.U. was the Chief Guest. Principal Maharaj presided and Dr. Angshuman Bhattacharyya delivered the vote of thanks. Swami Puratanananda welcomed.

Seminars and discourses:

  • The students and teachers of the Department of History attended the syllabus-oriented seminar at Women’s Christian College on 28th March, 2008.

  • The Department of Chemistry and 100 years of C.U. Post Graduate Teaching in Chemistry Celebration Committee jointly organised a seminar on 29th March, 2008 on ‘Chemistry and Industry’. The speakers were Dr. Ambika Charan Banerjee, East India Pharmaceutical Works, Assistant Professor Dr. Surojit Sinha, IACS. Prof. Dipak Kumar Mondal, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Presidency College was the Chairman of the Seminar. Dr. Bimal Kr. Sadhukhan was the anchor and vote of thanks was given by Prof. Snighdha Ganguly, Presidency College. Principal Maharaj welcomed.

  • Prof. Achintyam Chatterjee attended a State level Seminar on 11th April, 2008 at the South City College.

  • Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay was invited as a resource person to the ‘four-day’s Teachers’ Training Programme’ under JBNSTS from 19th May and 22nd May, 2008.

  • The Department of Chemistry organised a Laboratory Quiz for the 1st year students of M.Sc. on 30th April, 2008.

  • The Department of Physics organised a seminar on ‘Electromagnetism’ for the 2nd Year students on 15th May, 2008. Prof. Asit Banerjee, retired from J.U. , delivered the lecture.

  • The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) presented an 82.5 KVA generator for Rs.6 lakh. The meeting was held after inaugurating the generator by Mr. Dayamay Kavi, Executive Director (Marketing) at 10 a.m. in Room No. 1.1. on 14th April, 2008. Mr P.K.R. Nabhi, Mr. Amitabha Bhattacharya spoke. Principal Maharaj introduced. About 100 college students were present.

  • The ONGC at a meeting distributed Rs. 2 lakh to us to meet the major part of the expenses on Solar Water Heater. Principal Maharaj spoke and received the cheque on 22nd April, 2008.

Examinations :

  • As the centre of Part-III Honours Practical Examinations of C.U., our college has successfully organised the Examinations in May, 2008 with whole-hearted assistance from the teaching and non-teaching members of the Department of Chemistry, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics.

  • Our college was the centre of Theoretical Examinations of Part-III (both Honours & General). 583 students appeared.

  • The Test of 1st Year under-graduate students began on 26th April, 2008 and ended on 7th May, 2008. The Test of 2nd Year under-graduate students was held between 26th March, 2008 and 29th March, 2008.

  • Department of Chemistry and Physics organised M.Sc. Final Examinations between 14th May, 2008 and 19th May, 2008.

Meetings :

  • An inaugural meeting of the newly registered Cooperative Credit Society Limited was held on 10th April, 2008 at 3.30 p.m. at the College Hall. Swami Puratananandaji Maharaj was the Guest-in-Chief. Prof. Dipak Sankar Chakraborty, Chairman of the Society gave the welcome address. Inaugural address was given by Ms. Kakoli Chatterjee, Cooperative Development Officer, ARCS Office, Alipur, Kolkata. The other speakers were Ms. Bishakha Sengupta, C.I. Block Development Office, Sonarpur, Sri Biplab Nag and Sri Pradip Sarkar, Bank officials, WBSC Bank Ltd., Baruipur Branch and vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Achintyam Chatterjee.

  • Meeting of the Teachers’ Council was held at 2 p.m. on 21st May, 2008. Thirty three members of the teaching faculty were present.
